Dear YLES Hopefuls,
This post is to address all of your concerns and queries regarding the final round of the screening of teams for YLES ’10. Let’s start with the basics:
Time, Date and Venue:
The presentations will be held in the APWA Presentation Hall (3rd Floor).
Monday; November 2, 2009
The session is scheduled to begin at 4.30pm.
Panel of Judges:
To ensure transparency, fairness and well-rounded assessment, we have arranged for teachers specializing in different fields to assess your presentations. For that, one teacher of finance, one of marketing and one of small business management/entrepreneurship has been requested to sit through. Also, the same panel of judges will be judging all of the presentations so you can be assured of the consistency.
Line-Up:
To ensure that no bias or favoritism can be involved, we will shuffle the lineup of teams that will not reflect their current standing in the first round. The schedule and line-up will be announced soon. Please prepare your presentations in that while, instead of worrying about the time your turn will be at.
And now, for the details on HOW your presentation should be and what it should cover:
Presentation
Since we are assessing all the teams in one sitting and the judges have very limited times that they are devoting to this activity, we would like to assert the allowance of a maximum of 5-7 minutes per presentation. One of the members of the IBAES will be there notifying the presenters as they approach their time limit. No extra time will be allowed in any condition. This exercise will also prepare you for YLES since you have to convince the judges in exactly 5 minutes there as well.
Structure of Presentations
Your presentation should essentially cover the following aspects of your business plans:
- Core Idea/USP
- Target Market
- Marketing Plan/Promotion Strategy
- Financial Feasibility
- Source of Capital
- A brief analysis of key ratios (optional – please do NOT waste too much time on this)
- ROI
- Payback period
- Element of sustainability (if applicable)
- Future growth and penetration strategy
- Exit Strategy
Please note that your slides are clear, concise and too the point. Cluttered slides will only confuse the judges and lead to negative evaluation.
Tip: Two of the best speakers of your team should introduce and explain the presentation through while the others should answer the questions that the judges might throw at you. This will save time.
You will clearly be assessed on your presentation skills, confidence and general knowledge about the industry you are dealing with. Please be prepared in advance for any sort of questions coming your way from the judges to avoid last-minute surprises!
IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL:
It has been stressed by the panel of judges that the business plans that have made it to the top 10 still need alot of work and refining to be “good enough” for YLES. Hence, we strongly recommend that you do some additional homework on your industry in general and your business in particular to refine your plans and address their concerns. If you need to know the feedback and comments the judges gave on your business plans, please e-mail us (iba.entrepreneurshipsociety@gmail.com) with the name of your business plan and the members (please allow for at least 2-3 hours for a response).
Also, please prepare a refined 1-page executive summary BEFOREHAND which will go to the YLES management for team-registration.
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR TEAMS 11, 12, and 13:
The judges saw a good potential in your business plans and agreed to give you guys an extra shot. But it’s not over yet. You’ve got to do some extra homework to convince them that you’re up for it! You need to prepare a one-page write-up showing the STRENGTHS and OPPORTUNITIES your business has and the ways you will cover up for your WEAKNESSES and deal with your THREATS (this is NOT a SWOT Analysis). Also, you’ve got to convince the judges of the potential and future returns of your business idea. If your business plan lacked the element of sustainability and social benefit, make sure you add it.
Your write-up MUST NOT exceed a single page. If you need the feedback the judges gave on your plan, feel free to email us (address mentioned above).
Check back soon for more details.
Good Luck to you All! 🙂
